Hope, now Ellie (short for Elephant skin!) is doing so much better now that she has a new home.  What a difference from the skinny, mange ridden pug that she was.  Her new owners couldn't be happier although it took most of a year to see a big difference.  Here's what she has to say:
Hi Barbara,

We adopted Hope the pug last summer (now Ellie.)  Just wanted to let you all know that she's doing great!  She's completely covered with fur and the only thing that needs ongoing treatment are her eyes.  She did end up having to go to the eye specialist and she was actually sight impaired.  I was shocked because you'd never know it.  She had crescent moon type sight out of both eyes.  She gets 2 different eye drops and her eyes look much better to the eye vet.  We treated her skin through the summer and beyond, but got it under control and now she's looking fabulous!

She's an absolute riot.  Our pointer/lab mix is her best friend and they play like crazy.  We just got back from Carmel and she had a wonderful time at the beach.  Last year when we took her she ate the sand, but this year she decided to skip that activity.  Kate just started taking her to Rally obedience class and they're going to start competing in the junior class in Oct.  I'm kind of surprised--I thought a pug wouldn't want to sit or down or any of that, but she's doing really well.

Anyway, I think about you guys up there in Redding and have wanted to update you, but you know how it goes.  Ellie is having a great time and I don't think we can imagine being without her.  Keep up the good work!

Cathy
THE FACE OF A PUPPY MILL

Look closely at these sweet eyes and kind soul, as I am a product of a puppy mill.  My skin is rough, hairless, swollen and tender to the touch, my feet covered in sores.  I have demodectic mange and because my condition was left untreated, I now have secondary bacterial infections and yeast infections on my skin and between my swollen toes.  My face folds are swollen and my eyes have ulcers because I tried to rub away the pain and neglect.  My feet hurt so bad and are so sore from standing on the wire cage where I was kept a prisoner in a puppy mill.  I was all alone, I just wanted to be loved.

I have a heart of gold and am little for a pug because neglect and malnutrition would not let me grow properly.  But the good news is that with proper care, lots of kisses and hugs and YUCK! all my medicines, Dr. Sherry says I should be as good as new.  I and my two friends are out of the dark hole and wire cages, and oh yeah, my feet get to walk on soft grass and carpet for the very first time.  Please say a prayer for us and for all the others that remain in the puppy mill who continue to suffer like we did.  Maybe if we're lucky the humans who saved us can finally put a stop to all the pain and sorrow.
A note from this girl's rescuers:  If you'd like to make a donation towards her care, please click on the PayPal button or email to us to send a check.  She will be so grateful.  Thanks for reading...

Adoption fees include spay/neuter, vaccinations, flea treatment, heartworm test and preventative, wormings, and all other medical care needed to ensure a healthy dog.  Fees vary, based on the care required, age and needs of the animal.  We rely strictly on our adoption fees since we don't receive any outside funding.

The adoption fees we require do not cover the medical expenses, let alone the daily cost of taking care of the dogs we hope to re-home. Additional expenses are out-of-pocket.

We are ALL volunteers; there are NO paid employees in our rescue. The adoption fee is used to help with veterinary care. All of the dogs in our care are fully vetted, spayed/neutered, are up to date on all vaccines, are heartworm tested and kept on year round heartworm prevention. If they have tested positive for heartworm - they will be treated. Any and all medical issues that our vets find or that arise while in foster care are treated.

WE DO NOT ADOPT OUR DOGS TO HOMES WITH UNALTERED PETS...NO EXCEPTIONS!

In order to adopt one of these wonderful pups you will be required to: Fill out an adoption application, provide a veterinary reference, agree to a telephone/email screening, have one of our representatives conduct a home visit, complete and sign an adoption contract, and pay an adoption fee.

Please read about our detailed adoption policies and procedures (menu on left) before calling or emailing with questions.  Many of your questions can be answered by reading our information.  Keep in mind that the first step toward adoption is to fill out an application.  Also, WE DO NOT SHIP!
